Besides what it already accomplishes in matter of publications and conferences, Paulo Freire Institute of Los Angeles1, from University of California, among its several activities of formation, has as one of its most recent actions the development of the seventh edition of its Summer Program. Held between July 15 and August 09 of 2013, the Program gathers two courses, focused both for American and foreign students.
Hosted in the dependencies of UCLA, the Program was coordinated by Carlos Alberto Torres (coordinator of Department of Social Sciences and Comparative Education of the University and director of PFI – Paulo Freire Institute) and vice-coordinated by Chen-Wei Chang (associated director of PFI and specially linked to the Summer Program).
Professors Penny Jane Burke, Douglas Kellner, Marcella Milana, Ana Elvira Steinbach and Massimiliano Tarozzi were invited for this edition. In addition, others scholars from UCLA and other Universities also promptly contributed with the process, during the formative activities.
It is about, concretely, courses of post-graduation offered during the American summer, that, this year, had titles such as: Special Topics on Emergency Questions in Sociology of Education: Politic and Education and Special Topics in Comparative Education: The Dialectic of Global and Local.
For the foreign students, is included in the Program a mentoring on writing and reading in English (denominated ESL – English as a Second Language).
After the course was finished, in a total of four weeks, the participants received a transition of significant part of the process.
In 2013 there were a total of 47 students from Taiwan and Denmark and a teacher from Taiwan. The lecturers brought investigation, practice and experience from five different countries. Following are the photos of the first meeting.
The first week of formation was held from July 16 to 19, and were present Dr. Torres, Dr. Lauren Misiaszek, Dr. Greg Misiaszek, Dr. Juma, Dr. Kim, Dr. Milana, and Mr. Dorio, whose shared their knowledge through the results of personal investigations.
During the second week of the course, from July 22 to 26 of 2013, the topics highlighted were around the inter/multiculturality, education for peace, global governance, evaluation and ethics.
During the third week, which happened between July 29 and August 02, the emphases of dialogues were in new themes, such as multiculturalism, gender and LGBT, the university, ecological education, Dewey theory, as well as culture of media.
The last week of the Program was held from August 05 to 09 of 2013. In the last day, the students presented the projects that the developed in groups throughout the courses.
