The Faculty of Sciences and Technology (FCT), UNESP (Universidade Estadual Paulista Júlio de Mesquita) – Campus of Presidente Prudente/SP (with the support of Departments of Education, of Physical Education and of Geography, of the Program of Post-graduation in Education and of CEMOSi – Center of Memory, Documentation and Union Newspaper Library “Florestan Fernandes”) – and the Municipal Secretary of Education of Presidente Prudente city held on August 07 of 2013 the Paulo Freire Symposium, with the theme The Actuality Of Paulo Freire Facing The Challenges Of Twenty-First Century. Also, there are as supporters the Prograd (Rectory of Graduation of UNESP) and the Fundunesp.
The participation in the event was free and since the first month of promotion the entries were already closed, such was the demand.
The opening table of the event account with the presence of the following guests: Prof. Dr. Antonio Nivaldo Hespanhol (Director of FCT); Prof. M. Ed. Ondina Barbosa Gerbasi (Municipal Secretary of Education of Presidente Prudente); Prof. Dr. Eliane Vanhi Ortega (Coordinator of the Course of Pedagogy); Prof. Dr. Irineu Aliprando Tuim Viotto (Coordinator of the Program of Post-graduation in Education of FCT); Prof. Dr. Raul Borges Guimarães (Head of Department of Geography – FCT) and Prof. Dr. Márcia Regina Canhoto de Lima (Head of Department of Physical Education – FCT).
At 9h, in the Auditorium of UNESP, began the first round-table, with the theme “Education as Practice of Freedom”. The mediation was made by Prof. Dr. Maria de Fátima Rotta Furlanetti and its debators were Prof. Dr. Denise Regina da Costa Aguiar, from Paulo Freire Chair, Prof. Marisa Luz, from MST and Prof. Dr. Onaide Mendonça. Head of Department of Education of FCT.
From 13h30 to 15h there was a presentation of posters, at Pátio Discente. In the sequence was held a round-table “Politic and education”, with the participation of Professors Doctors Cristiano Di Giorgi and Márcia Regina de Lima, both from FCT, besides Prof. Dr. Timothy Ireland, from UNESCO Chair of Education of Youth and Adults.
Closing the activities of the day were held the last round-table, entitled “The actuality of the thought of Paulo Freire”. Professors Dr. Sergio Haddad, from Educative Action, and Cristiano Di Giorgi, from FCT, debated the theme.
The completed works presented by the participants will be publish in the final publications of the event. According to the organizing committee, the best works can also be publish in book.
The Symposium were inserted in the agenda of commemorations promoted by the Ministry of Education and Culture of Brazil (MEC) called “50 years of Angicos”, as observes it in the stamp below, promoting the organization of the event. It is also important to highlight that the event included the thematic, “Fifty years of freirean revolution in the education”, as announces one of the subtitles of the event.
