The International Seminar “Popular Education, Paulo Freire and the Contemporary Pedagogical Thought” before it even happens was already very significant: it was about the birthday of 30 years of the return of the rule of law after civil-military dictatorship, which began in 1976 in Argentina; also 40 years of CREAR (Campaña de Reactivación de la Educación de Adultos para la Reconstrucción), program which in 1973 was focused to promote and accomplish the literacy of adults in different parts of this same country; it was about also the Angicos’ 50 years, the city of Brazilian Northeast where Paulo Freire applied for the first time his method of literacy.
To celebrate and promote these marks, admittedly Freirean imprint, on August 15, 16 and 17 of 2013,at Instituto Superior del Profesorado Sagrado Corazón, Almagro, in Buenos Aires, the Seminar developed itself in 3 axes to guide the presentations and reflections: dialogicity, awareness and political scope of education. The meeting had moments of academic exhibitions, circles of popular culture, presentation of educational and social experiences, tributes to personalities linked to recuperation of histories of the literacy educators of Latin America and Caribbean. The main intentions of the event were recover Paulo Freire thought, of Angicos (1963) until our present; create memory of the CREAR Program, developed in Argentina; reconstruct the marks of several processes of popular education in which the thought of Paulo Freire left an indelible and inescapable mark; recreate the Circles of Culture founded by Paulo Freire as spaces for the dialogue, political debate and of awareness to transform the reality; share social and educative histories and experiences with other educators, academics and activists of Latin America. The seminar was intended and received educators, academics, universities, students, social militants who recreate Paulo Freire in their daily and professional practices, as well as general public.
Among the special guests, there was the presence of educators from Argentina and also from countries such as Brazil and Cuba.
