From July 3rd to 6th, 2015 in Cataeeggio, Italy, more than 50 people gathered for the V National Meeting of Freire and Boal Italian Networks.
The idea of this Meeting began in 2010, when the groups “Giolli Cooperative” and “Popoli in arte” debated the necessity of collaboration between Freire and Boal Followers. In Italy, generally, people who know Augusto Boal practice or know very little about the educator Paulo Freire and the same happens with those that know Freire, that practice or know very little about Boal. So, it looks there are two worlds regarding the practice exercises as the academic studies.
In spite of this distance, the dialogue between the Freire and Boal’s studies is fruitful and important.
The “meeting” between the two nets started in San Remo, where happened a Freirian Meeting that Roberto Mazzini, from Golli, got in touch with two Brazilians, also invited. The collaboration between Boal and Freire started at that moment.
Observed the importance of sharing experiences, it happened, in 2011, the first meeting trying to get closer professionals that actuated having as reference Augusto Boal and Paulo Freire. Collaborators, actors and study groups were invited for this first meeting during the one the principles concepts of Boal and Freire were read and debated. In the 2015 Meeting, people tried to match the analysis of the two icons with theatrical exercises from Boal, trying to put in practice his principles of the first globality: mind, heart and emotion.
The meeting has been very rich and pleasurable.
The theme of this V National Meeting of Freire and Boal Italian Networks was “participation”. The activities were distributed in two moments: one for institutional experiences and the other for practical experiences. Participative budget, participation and cooperation were the topics of the debates. Boal and Freire, their theories and principles, were introduced to the debates as two manners trough which the participants analyzed the fragilities and the strong points of the shared experiences.
The objective of these Meetings, past and future, is to turn possible that the principles of both figures, that are central as expression of popular form as well as for the educational part as for the theater, be applied concretely in the experiences that are developed. Besides that, we understand that analyzing the happenings in the light of Freire and Boal is to revitalize their words in front of society in which we live. To use the body and the mind as a critical form, enhancing popular conscientiousness, taking people out of passivity and from the position of “empty receptors” it is also one of the axes of the organization of the meeting.
