(Paulo Freire, Pedagogy of autonomy)

The International Meeting of Paulo Freire Forum reaches its IX edition. The first meeting took place in 1998 and the others have been held at biennial intervals. The proposal for the “meetings” is to build dialogue between everyone who identifies with freirian thoughts, among them, the network of Institutes Paulo Freire (currently rooted on 5 continents), the Unifreire, centers studies and that the chairs make up Freirian network in the world. They consist in important opportunities for dialogue and exchange between people and groups who seek concrete alternatives of education, socio-cultural development and lifestyles that oppose the homogenizing logic of neoliberal globalization.

The next International Meeting of Paulo Freire Forum has beeing organized by Paulo Freire Institute-Italy and is going to happen in Turin from 17 to 20, September. The event was conceived and planned by organizations, groups and individuals working in situations and contexts where forms of injustice and exclusion generated by the processes of neoliberal globalization are maintained and enhanced, even if concealed. Thus, the Paulo Freire Institute-Italy has proposed to build along with associations, groups, movements and individuals in civil society, ways of thinking in the search for new alternatives theoretical and practical oriented, economic, cultural, educational and social sustainable development .

The brazilian educator Paulo Freire’s legacy (1921-1997) has being updated and reinvented in different countries, in order to expand and to continue the many contributions he built during his life. The Freirian educational movement, which is very diverse now a days, continues linked to social movements that aim to fight oppression, seek social justice and the construction of civil and democratic rights. Accordingly, the main objectives of the International Meeting of Paulo Freire Forum are:
- Reflecting critically on the dominant model in contemporary civilization, its manifestations, logical, consequences, forms of exclusion and domestication;
- Sharing experiences, educational and socio-cultural practices taking place in different contexts, expressing particular alternatives to dominant models.
- Reflecting on the ways and practices of resistance to “re-existence” and construction of new lifestyles and models of coexistence based on attitudes and personal and social skills that foster new relationships among generations and among different ethnic and cultural groups.

The general theme of the International Meeting of 2014 will be “Paths of emancipation beyond the crisis”.

September 17, 2014

Morning Time:

9 am – Opening of the Forum. Tribute to Bartolomeu Bellanova and (In memorian) to Gino Piccio.
9h30 am – Inaugural Conference: The Freire’s Pedagogy in a globalized world procuder of exclusions and inequalities.
12h- Presentation of the five themes of the Forum.

Evening Time:

From 13 to 18h – Further reflection on the themes (*):
1. The education that emancipates against injustices, inequalities and vulnerabilities.
2. Education: local issues, citizen participation (popular participation), empowerment and renewal of social and political democracy.
3 . The relationship between planetary citizenship and ecopedagogy.
4. The relationship between the art world and the existential and educational communication.
5. Pedagogy for the construction of justice spaces in the occupied territories by corruption, lawlessness and crime.
(*) It’s foreseed round-tables with a brief introduction, made by 1 or 2 guests, followed by opened discussion and/or submission of registerd papers. Depending on the number of inscriptions, the time may be divided: from 13h to 15h30, discussion groups and deepening and from 16h to 18h30, performing Culture Circles and/or laboratory of experiences

To 13 from 18h – Short courses (optional, conducted by invited experts, subject to the existence of demand) on the following topics:
Education – contribution to active citizenship
Language teaching – A multilingual proposal
Ecopedagogy school
Paulo Freire in the classroom
Introduction to Freire’s political-pedagogical thought
Free afternoon for those who do not participate in short courses

From 14h30 to 18h – Culture Circles on Italian and international experiences, relevant to the five main themes of the Forum.

September 20, 2014

Morning Time:

9am – The University of the popular “barefoot” (Villages’ Barefoot College – India) – brief report and testimony.
9h30 am – Closing conference: Another world is possible: social justice and the common good in a planetary perspective.
13h – Closing and Reading of the Charter of the International Meeting of Paulo Freire Forum from Torino.

Evening Time:

14h – Cultural programming – for people who are interested.
